Talking Health, Thinking Safety is a monthly initiative by Prime Mover, Eaton and R&R Corporate Health to promote health and safety issues to the commercial road transport industry. Each month our expert Matthew Beechey, Director of R&R Corporate Health, will offer advice on how we can turn our industry into becoming healthier, safer and more productive.

Every one of us, regardless of the profession, shares a common goal – to leave home, work smart and return home safely. But the framework we have created doesn’t always make it easy.

Who you’ve been, who you are now and who you want to be in the future – they are the questions that count.
If you have been following Talking Health, Thinking Safety throughout the year, you’ve probably read enough about the relationship between physical health and workplace performance. Therefore, let’s go mental.

Guidelines around driver fatigue are very much front-of-mind across the logistics industry. But what about the time drivers spent off the road?
‘Hours of driving’ is a science in its own right. It has been studied, scrutinised and altered for the safety of heavy vehicle drivers and of course, the people they share the road with. Schedules, rosters and shift rotations are also being reviewed regularly to minimise driver fatigue, which again is a sign that companies are thinking outside the square.

The great Mahatma Ghandi once stated that, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated.” And so it is with our great Aussie Road Warriors, the men and women who from their trucks form the lifeblood of the corporate community. As these selfless, hard working truck drivers traverse this great land, they are often made to endure sub-standard facilities in which to rest, revive and restore.

Prosperous, creative organisations are a joy to watch in full flight. Successful companies are built around teams of motivated, enthusiastic and engaged staff working together towards a common goal, sharing a fervent desire to maintain productivity and look out for each other’s safety. Sounds good doesn’t it?

If I was a fly on the wall of Australian boardrooms, I’d hope to hear discussions around what can be done to reduce the potential tidal wave of cost caused by the country’s ageing workforce.

We are fast heading into the colder, shorter months of the calendar year – a time when companies typically suffer spikes in muscle and joint injuries and absenteeism goes through an anticipated rise. It’s also a time when many staff enter ‘health hibernation’ – content to exercise less and tuck into comfortable, warming foods. They don’t naturally feel thirsty in the colder air so many simply stop or greatly reduce their water intake. Less exercise, unhealthy food, zero hydration – the perfect recipe for illness, injuries and accidents.

As 2013 fast approaches the second quarter, business leaders all over Australia are working closely with occupational health and safety and HR teams to explore initiatives with potential to reduce the risk and incidence of sprains and strains. Investing enormous time and energy in workplace injuries is well worth it, as they change people’s lives forever and incur great cost to a business.

In the first edition of Talking Health, Thinking Safety you were asked to consider measuring your waist and setting yourself the goal of maintaining or decreasing your girth over the course of 2013. The more research that is done into ‘tummy fat’, the more we realise how dangerous it is to long-term health and incidence of back pain. Take a moment, look down at your mid riff and if you see a bulge, look yourself in the eye and make a pact to eat better and exercise more.

If you’ve been involved in the transport industry long enough, you may remember the old days, when high-visibility gear was still a novelty and designated walking areas marked by yellow lines started to appear.
