AJM Transport’s new location
AJM Transport is capitalising on a prime location between the Hunter Valley centres of Newcastle and Maitland – adjacent to three major transport routes.
Owned by Anthony and Megan Mansell, AJM Transport is all about making the most out of its unique location between the M1, the Pacific and the New England Highway.
Capitalising on being located midway between Melbourne and Brisbane, a large proportion of AJM’s work involves shuttles and changeovers, although they still have up to 12 traditional interstate trucks at any one time carrying their own loads and consignments too.
Almost all of the freight AJM carries is time-sensitive. Around 65 per cent of that ‘overnight express freight’ is being handled for companies such as Mainfreight and CEVA, while AJM’s own clientele accounts for the difference.
“If we do a Melbourne to Newcastle trip, we turn it into a changeover at Gundagai rather than going straight through, so we get a prime mover back here. We can then give that truck to our local guys, so we utilise the equipment a bit more efficiently,” Anthony explains.
“We run a pretty unique shuttle system. We normally run four trailer combinations every day each out of Melbourne and Brisbane, but we only use three prime movers,” he adds. “Delays due to accidents and breakdowns will still happen, but we are able to move it and shake it a little if there has been a hold up at the top end.
