Liquid science

Liquid science

It’s a simple truth – a transport business won’t be successful without a functioning truck. Prime Mover goes behind the scenes to find out why a modern lubricant should not only be optimised to reduce fuel consumption and maintenance cost, but to help extend vehicle life in general.

It’s an unrewarding job, especially in a vast and diverse country like Australia – although a modern lubricant has to work extremely hard to keep a vehicle running at peak performance anywhere between Brisbane and Perth, it is often overlooked as a key element to success. Like anywhere in life, a job done well will often go unnoticed.

Behind the scenes, however, getting an inconspicuous product like oil or grease to perform without fault is a science in itself – so much so that global energy giant Shell recently invested a in whole new research facility in China to get those last few percentages out of modern truck oil. Opened in March, the company’s nine-storey ‘innovation incubator’ outside Shanghai is meant to explore tomorrow’s lubrication technology in close proximity to the highly dynamic Asian marketplace.

In the long run, it may be private sector investment like Shell’s that will help businesses in Australia get more out of every drop of oil and remain profitable.
