In early September, the weekend Fairfax papers carried a story on truck safety and recent accidents. Any casual reader of the story would have been left with a very bad – and very wrong – picture of the trucking industry.

Trucks are critical to Australia’s supply chains. A significant majority of non-bulk domestic freight is carried on roads, and the Productivity Commission has found that only 10 to 15 per cent of the freight task is contestable across both rail and road. Without trucks – there is no supply chain.

NatRoad often gets asked how businesses deal with difficult employees following receipt of an unfair dismissal claim by the employer, after they had terminated the employment of an underperforming employee. Considering the number of unfair dismissal claims that now find their way to the Fair Work Commission, it is a topic worthy of attention.

I am pleased to report that the National Road Transport Association’s (NatRoad) Youth Committee has been busy selecting a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to deliver a NatRoad Youth Driver Training Scheme. The scheme is being designed and coordinated by the committee in conjunction with the successful partner RTO.
