It seeks to bring together manufacturers and suppliers of equipment, parts and services to the road transport industry to promote safety, productivity and the general reputation of the industry. This has highlighted to me the importance of diligent maintenance and scheduled replacement of wheel bearings.   • Technical Requirements for Dangerous Goods Vehicles

    The technical standards required for vehicles carrying dangerous goods (DG) are in the news because of recent announcements that all new DG-carrying tanker trailers in NSW will require roll-stability control systems as of 1 July 2014, and that retrofitting of existing tank trailers will also need to be carried out over a five-year period.

  • The inimitable Mr. Hogan

    I first heard about Alan Hogan when I worked in engineering at Kenworth Trucks, about 20 years ago. The discussion I heard was about Mr Hogan’s practice of bending steer axles to change the camber angle. I thought, don’t the axle suppliers know how to set camber already? Apparently not. I heard that some customer-service guys occasionally took problem trucks to Hogan’s Axle Corrections for rework.

    The full answer to the ‘camber controversy’ became clear to me over the next few years. Camber settings need to be different depending upon the shape of, and side of the road being driven. To achieve excellent steer tyre wear, the camber on each side of the front axle needs to be set for conditions.
    I recently arranged for Alan Hogan to talk to at ARTSA’s Forensic Engineering Course. He has more than 50 years of experience of wheel alignment and axle settings on heavy trucks.

  • New brake rules bring new benefits and new risks

    The confirmation of the new trailer brake rule, ADR 38/04, should be welcomed. From 1 January 2015, most new trailers are required to have either an Antilock brake system (ABS) or a Load-Sensing brake system (LSB). ADR 35/04, which mandates ABS (and not LSB) on new trucks, was confirmed in July 2013.The main motivation for these requirements is to improve the safety of combination-vehicle braking when the trailer is lightly loaded. Let’s consider the pluses and minuses of the new trailer rule.
