Backing up a strong finish to 2016, Australian truck sales are off to its best start in years, according to Truck Industry Council data for January.
Continuing a strong fourth quarter in 2016, sales figures compiled by the TIC saw 1,442 cab chassis and prime movers sold in January, 184 more than for the same month in 2016 (up 14.6 per cent).
The heavy-duty category results are up 9.3 per cent (41 units) with Isuzu and Kenworth encouraged by results, with the latter confirming that order books are filling quickly especially for its game changing T610 model that joined the market in December.
Medium-duty showed a slight gain (2.8 per cent) with 360 trucks for January 2016 compared with 350 last year; while light-duty trucks had a great start to the year with 603 units, beating January 2016’s 470 for an increase of 28.3 per cent.
Furthermore, Australia’s van category tallied 478 units, a gain of 46.6 per cent from the same period in 2016. The segment was led by Renault’s 257 units for the month, more than double its January 2016 result.
