Australia’s oldest battery manufacturer takes delivery of milestone Hino

A Brisbane-based company with a ten year association with Hino Australia has taken recent delivery of its latest Sci-Fleet Hino – it marks the 100th it has purchased.

Century Yuasa Batteries, which runs 48 Hino commercial vehicles, the majority of which are Hino 300 Series trucks, on this occasion added to its fleet a 700 Series 6x4 FS 2848 rigid.

It will pull a three-axle dog trailer.

Australia's oldest battery manufacturer, Century Yuasa was established in 1928.

At present it produces over one million batteries a year.

Its fleet delivers batteries into local mechanics and the retail sites of Supercheap, Repco, Battery World and Bridgestone across Northern NSW and Southeast Queensland.

At any one time in each of the states the company is running eight trucks according to David Blackburn Century Yuasa Batteries Group Reporting Accountant.

"We also have a forklift battery business and we run the Hino 300 Series with a crane on the back to remove batteries from forklifts if they need maintenance work," he says.

"We return the battery to base to run diagnostics and repair if possible, and then deliver it back to the customer."

Century Yuasa Batteries changes over an estimated ten to 12 Hinos a year once they reach the end of lease term.

The company originally opted for the hybrid engine under a mandate to be green but has opted, more recently, for diesel engines in order to carry heavier payloads.

Having invested millions of dollars on a new production line the company, whose majority of staff have been with it for 20 years, releases new products regularly and understands the importance of moving with the times.

Every Hino comes with a Yuasa battery, belying the relationship already in place between the two companies.

Blackburn said the drivers are big fans of the new Hino 500 Series FC 1224 praising its comfort and driveability.

"Obviously safety is a key issue for us, and having driver assist and the other safety options gives us extra confidence, which makes it even more appealing," he says.

These include Pedestrian Detection with Pre-Collision Safety, Lane Departure Warning and Cruise Control.
