Michael Byrne, new Managing Director of the Toll Group, has used the Australian Logistics Council’s (ALC) 2017 Forum in Melbourne as a stage to reinforce the call for mandatory telematics across the supply chain.
“We must consider making telematics mandatory across all modes, it would help everyone achieve more,” he said at the event currently being held at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
“Is your truck is as efficient and safe as it can be, is it performing as it should? Who wouldn’t want to know that? By not committing to telematics, we’re making ourselves less efficient as an industry.”
Byrne’s comment reinforced an ALC recommendation made in August 2016, when it announced it would advocate for a mandatory telematics roll-out “to improve safety and to meet companies’ CoR (Chain of Responsibility, ed.) obligations”.
In a trenchant first public outing as Toll’s new Managing Director, Byrne also called for a national approach to heavy vehicle driver fatigue and briefly touched on his vision for the future of the Toll business under his leadership.
“It’s not just about making our customers more efficient and more profitable anymore, that’s expected as standard now,” he said. “They’re looking at what you can do beyond that, what value you can add, and telematics will be part of that added value offering.”
In line with this, Byrne announced a shift within the Toll Group to become “even more customer-centric”, but didn’t specify what it would entail. “We will make an announcement in due course,” he said.
