Double-digit truck sales growth in July

July 2017 has recorded the best month of truck sales since the Global Financial Crisis, with all four of the vehicle sectors posting gains over July 2016, according to the latest data from the Truck Industry Council (TIC).

Total heavy vehicle sales for the month were 2,936 units, up 13.2 per cent over the same month last year and year-to-date sales rose eight per cent compared to the same period last year, at 1,457 trucks.

The heavy-duty truck segment continued a positive yearlong trend, with a total of 909 units delivered, up a significant 18.8 per cent, or 144 trucks, on July 2016.

Year-to-date the results saw heavy sales up 14.5 per cent, counting an additional 764 trucks sold year-to-date than in 2016.

According to TIC, medium-duty truck sales have been a bit up and down so far in 2017, but the month of July is one of best months of the year so far with 653 trucks delivered, up a 19.6 per cent over July 2016 sales.

Year-to-date medium truck sales boast a 2.2 per cent increase over 2016, with a total of 3,975 trucks delivered to the end of July 2017, up by 84.

Light-duty truck sales have seen solid growth in 2017, with a total of 924 light-duty trucks delivered in July, a gain of 7.9 per cent or 68 trucks over July 2016.

Year-to-date LD truck sales are up over the same period last year by 500 trucks, or 8.5 per cent.

In July 2017, the Van segment posted a total of 450 sales, up 5.6 per cent, or 24 units more than July 2016. Year-to-date the tally is up 3.4 per cent  over 2016 results, 3,338 sales to the end of July 2017 compared to 3,229 deliveries for the same period in 2016.

TIC President, Phil Taylor, said, “July is typically a slow month for truck sales and coming off the record June sales that we saw at this financial year end was always going to be a hard act to follow.

"It is encouraging to see that July 2017 sales, although not a record, were right up there and have continued the sales growth that we saw in the first half of this year. It is pleasing to see both the heavy and medium truck markets recorded healthy double digit percentage growth compared to July 2016.”

While Tony McMullan, the TIC’s Chief Executive Officer, said he was happy to see the second half of the year get off to a strong start.

"We saw solid sales in the first half of 2017, culminating in record June new truck sales. It is now very pleasing to see strong July sales, this is a positive start to quarter three and the back half of the year," McMullan said.
