Extended cab ProStar offers alternative to curbside collections

Waste removal subcontractor, Sean O’Connor pilots an extended cab International ProStar for Melbourne-based waste removal company Citywide.

Configured to a haul a three axle single trailer, his International ProStar is proving there is a role for truck combinations in waste beyond those typically associated with curbside collection.

Transporting refuse from collection centres in Melbourne to designated landfill sites on the outskirts of the city, O’Connor, who has nearly 30 years experience in the transport industry, closely studied truck specifications online before settling on purchasing an International.

“In the end I liked the look of the ProStar it had the specifications I wanted – the fit and finish and feel of the cabin was good, and it was competitively priced,” he said.

Featuring the standard 550 horsepower Cummins X15 SCR engine and Eaton Ultrashift Plus automated manual transmission, the ProStar fits Citywide’s requirements that all its trucks be automated. Full LED lighting ensure the truck is highly visible during the early hours before sunrise.

A power divider with cross locks on both axles allow for improved traction in slippery early morning conditions that commonly impact some of the sites. Rubber guards have been fitted to the rear axles making them easier to clean and maintain according to O’Connor.

The extended cab provides the option of sleeping in the truck should an unplanned rest stop be warranted while offering him additional storage.

“The ProStar looks good, goes well, is comfortable and is quiet,” said O’Connor.
