Fresh start with Isuzu food truck

When a work-related injury put paid to Steve McClintock’s career as a long-haul truckie, he embarked on an entrepreneurial journey to establish Com N’ Get It, a food truck business based at Ayr in north Queensland.

“Apart from the obvious chain cafes, there are barely any restaurants or food services open after hours in Ayr,” said McClintock. “I saw this as a great opportunity to open a food truck for people who work late at night, and for those who have been out on the town and are looking for good food.”

With advice and support from the knowledgeable team at Isuzu dealer Patterson Cheney and A&B Food Truck Outfitters Australia, McClintock chose the Isuzu NPR 65-190 to be his restaurant on wheels.

“Both the teams at A&B and Patterson Cheney recommended that I go with the Isuzu NPR based on the specifications I needed for the food truck. And to be honest, I am so glad they did,” he said.

“This baby of mine is excellent on the road; it’s so smooth and easy to drive. It has the six-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) and the manoeuvrability is great, I love it.”

With a gross vehicle mass of 6,500kg, power of 140kW at 2,600 rpm and torque of 513Nm between 1,600 and 2,600 rpm, the Isuzu NPR 65-190 makes light work of hauling the 4.3m x 2.4m mobile kitchen which houses three sinks, a hot water system, fryers, a refrigerator, freezers and a 7 kVA generator.

Com N’ Get It’s delicious food speaks for itself as the business has steadily grown since its inception in August 2017 from being a one-man show to now having a staff of three.

“The pressure-cooked chicken prepared with my own marinade recipe is one that I am personally very fond of, and it resonates with the public too,” McClintock said.

“This past year has been a lesson in running a food truck business. From dealing with a wide variety of people, training new staff, dealing with equipment breakdowns… It’s been a busy year,” he added.

“But despite all the other hiccups, my truck has never disappointed and has always been reliable with no downtime issues at all, which is vital in this business.”

“And knowing that I have Isuzu Care service, I know I don’t have to worry about a breakdown!”
