Heroic truck driver honoured by ATA

A truck driver whose brave actions helped protect victims of a road accident last November has been recognised by the Australian Trucking Association with the Bridgestone Bandag Highway Guardian award.

George Athanasiou, a contractor for Australian Personnel Solutions (APS), while driving to make a delivery for Americold on the Mornington Peninsula encountered a crash site involving a tow truck and passenger car at a major intersection.

By positioning his truck to help shield victims in the accident, Athanasiou blocked oncoming traffic and assisted the severely injured tow truck driver who required immediate attention.

Athanasiou received the Bridgestone Bandag Highway Guardian accolade at the Americold Laverton depot where ATA Chairman, Geoff Crouch, and Bridgestone Manager, Geoff May, both presented him with the award.

Andrew Moffatt, Bridgestone Australia and New Zealand, Managing Director, praised Athanasiou for his selfless efforts.

“We are pleased to recognise George Athanasiou as a Bridgestone Highway Guardian. It takes a certain type of person to lend assistance at a major accident site and Mr Athanasiou did so with such composure,” he said.

Athanasiou, according to Moffat, joined an elite chapter of Australian trucking professionals acknowledged for their courage and duty to aid those in need.

Sarah Russell, Australian Personnel Solutions Victorian State Manager, said Athanasiou was highly regarded by the business and its customers.

“George is one of the most loyal and hardworking employees we have. He is extremely versatile, and has demonstrated this by working across multiple areas of the business including driving, loading, yard and allocation roles,” she said.

“He is a great asset to our business.”

Australian Trucking Association Chairman Geoff Crouch extended his gratitude and admiration for the resolve and actions of Athanasiou and recognised the counselling and medical services offered by APS.

“The Australian trucking industry is lucky to have members like George Athanasiou. He has more than 20 years’ experience behind the wheel with a spotless driving record, and the ATA is proud to recognise his efforts with the Bridgestone Bandag Highway Guardian Award,” said Crouch.

“This award not only recognises incredible individuals in our industry, but also highlights the dangers on our roads and the need for support systems for our truck drivers.”
