INNOV8 truck attenuator delivers highway safety

Traffic management equipment supplier, INNOV8 Equipment will partner in an exclusive arrangement with IVECO Daily and Eurocargo cab chassis models for its truck-mounted attenuators it announced this week.

Used for traffic management and road construction applications, the attenuators provide a critical safety barrier between traffic and workers.

Featuring fold down shock absorbing crash cushions on trucks rearward facing oncoming traffic, the Light Truck Mounted Attenuator has been constructed of energy-absorbing bars and galvanised steel support structures to protect workers in the event the truck is hit from behind.

Tested to TL-2 standard, in which it can handle impacts of up to 70 kilometres per hour, the INNOV8 Light Truck Mounted Attenuator is designed to requirements of the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP).

A larger Blade Truck Mounted Attenuator has been evaluated in accordance with TL-3 standards making it capable of absorbing a crash from a heavy vehicle at 100 kilometres per hour.

According to Nigel McKinley, INNOV8 Managing Director the company had been using IVECO products exclusively now for over 12 months, and was pleased with the partnership.

“Our company is driven by safety, innovation and compliance – it’s the prime focus of how we develop, engineer and manufacturer all of our products,” he said.

“In IVECO we’ve found a partner with similar values and goals. Our company is now solely using the Daily and Eurocargo for our LTMA/cone and bollard trucks and Blade products after changing from a Japanese manufacturer, and we’re extremely happy with the result.”

“From a customer perspective we’ve also received great feedback – every customer has been so impressed with the usability of the IVECO models.”

McKinley said all vehicles for which it was working with cab chassis suppliers must be automatic and feature a full suite of safety equipment.

“IVECO’s engineering support has been first-class and fitting the attenuators to the cab chassis is a streamlined process,” he said.

Six days into its working life one of the new Eurocargos was impacted by a motorist while on highway maintenance duties in Melbourne IVECO confirmed.

The driver was estimated to be travelling at over 90 kilometres an hour.

All workers were kept safe while the driver of the car escaped without injury.

Following a precautionary chassis laser alignment test and having a replacement Blade refitted, the Eurocargo returned to service.

“The Euro 6 Eurocargo sets new safety standards in the medium duty segment and also provides us with a truck that meets the most stringent emission requirements,” said McKinley.

“This is in keeping with INNOV8’s environmental focus.”
