K&S Freighters aligns with fleet focus program

Melbourne-based logistics specialist, K&S Freighters, has simplified the task of ordering parts for its operations which includes clients nationwide.

Offering road, rail and coastal sea forwarding services to the likes of Caltex, BlueScope, OneSteel, the Laminex Group, Inghams, Norske Skog, Alcoa, BHP Petroleum and Coca-Cola, K&S Freighters relies on around 5,500 assets including nearly 1,500 commercial vehicles and 3,5000 trailers.

As a high percentage of its vehicles are IVECOs, K&S has, over the past 25 years, sourced parts and accessories from the commercial vehicle manufacturer.

It now uses the Fleet Focus Program to ensure its workshops run efficiently and to reduce downtime across the hard working trucks and vans in its transport operations.

All vehicles are covered under the program, which mirrors a one-stop-shop model, regardless of make.

K&S National Maintenance Manager David Burgess said his company has 18 maintenance facilities around Australia each of which carry consignment stock from IVECO.

“Their stock represents about 75 – 80 per cent of everything we hold in our workshops nationally,” he said.

The remainder of the work, according to Burgess, involves remote depots where the company chooses to rely on external repairers.

Even though the relationship commenced with K&S operating multiple IVECO vehicles in the fleet, it has since evolved to reflect the maintenance business of which K&S is seeing many great benefits such as tailored parts and accessory service.

As a basis for the program, IVECO along with each individual dealership conduct regular stock takes and replenish stock accordingly.

In helping to ensure parts are always on hand IVECO claims it reduces the need for its customers to make emergency orders.

“I don’t think this would be possible without the strong relationship we have with IVECO. It shows that they understand our business," said Burgess.

“This is important because, apart from ensuring we have the stock we need, it also means we never end up with excess stock. From our point of view, the whole arrangement helps ensure our workshops run smoothly,” he said.

As a result the flexibilities afforded it by the Fleet Focus Program, K&S workshops can operate on afternoon shifts and carry out repairs at night. This works for the business, according to Burgess, who said the company maintained several workshops in remote areas of Australia.

“From one end of the country to the other, we know that we will always receive the same level of service. That’s the secret to their success,” he said.

“The IVECO Aftermarket Solutions team is always up to speed on technology changes, new product releases, changes within our business, changes to their business, and so on.”
