NHVR to trial new PBS Design Approval process

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is trialling a new process for Performance-Based Standards (PBS) Design Approval applications submitted in the lead up to the next PBS Review Panel meeting.

The new process, according to the NHVR, is in response to industry feedback will include the following steps:

  • PBS Design Approval Applications received by close of business Friday 13 September will be considered by the Panel out of session, as per normal processes.
  • PBS Design Approval Applications received between Monday 16 September and Tuesday 8 October:
  • that are complex in nature or for a novel type of combination, may be directed to the Panel for consideration at their October meeting; or
  • that are for common combination types or pre-advised designs, will be submitted to the Panel out of session for consideration, as per normal processes.
  • PBS Design Approval Applications received from Wednesday 9 October will be considered by the Panel out of session, as per normal processes.

The PBS Review Panel meeting will be held at NHVR’s Brisbane office on 29 and 30 October.

In March, a VIC transport operation reported breakthrough efficiencies with a PBS B-quad combination.
