NSW advocates national safety package

The New South Wales Government is calling for national support to take further steps to improve heavy vehicle safety.

Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey, will prosecute the need for NSW’s Heavy Vehicle Safety Package with other states and territories, following a meeting in Darwin for a Transport Infrastructure Council meeting.

Pavey said that because the freight industry is not constrained by borders, the way heavy vehicle safety is addressed should not be constrained either.

“Most recent figures show that NSW moves around 30 million tonne-kilometres of freight a year and over 20 million tonne-kilometres travels across our border,” said Pavey.

“NSW is a through state for much of Australia’s road freight; and as a result, we have a higher incidence of heavy vehicle movements than the rest of the country.

“It’s why I’m calling on my counterparts in other states to support the NSW Heavy Vehicle Safety Package to take a national approach to heavy vehicle safety.”

According to Pavey, the safety package will encourage greater industry uptake of telematics, increase safety features in heavy vehicle standards, undertake a heavy vehicle in depth-crash study, educate other road users on sharing the road with heavy vehicles, ensure suitability of operators to run their freight business and investigate technology to assist operators on managing fatigue.

“We know that more needs to be done to address road safety targets and drive the road toll down,” said Pavey. “Changing to a national approach and working with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator is important to ensure our roads are a safe place for all road users.”
