NTC encourages drivers to participate in fatigue research

The National Transport Commission (NTC) has announced it wants more truck drivers to take part in a research project for heavy vehicle driver fatigue.

It will work with the Cooperative Research Centre for Alertness, Safety and Productivity (Alertness CRC) in conjunction with industry and government bodies for an evaluation of the impacts of the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) on driver fatigue.

NTC Chief Executive Paul Retter said there was insufficient evidence available on the causes and impacts of fatigue to determine the changes required in fatigue policy.

“The heavy vehicle industry requires more flexibility in fatigue regulation, however, first we need to better understand fatigue and the road safety challenges it represents,” he said.

“There is a lack of comparable data, and data in general, on fatigue risks associated with heavy vehicle driving. We need robust evidence to underpin any future reforms of the fatigue regulations in the HVNL.”

A video exploring the real-world and laboratory phases of the study, released by the NTC, encourages more drivers to get involved.

“Drivers are vital in helping us understand fatigue. We need more drivers and operators to take up this valuable opportunity to share their experiences,” said Retter.

The project is one of the initiatives the NTC is exploring as part of a broader work program that focuses on improving road safety outcomes.

Research for the project is due to be completed by the end of 2018.

Transport ministers can expect to be presented with the findings by the NTC as early as May 2019.
