Road fatalities down for May year-on-year

The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) has released its bulletin for May on road fatalities in Australia.

There was a total of 111 road deaths during May 2019, according to the report. The current figure is 9.9 per cent higher than the average for May over the previous five years.

During the 12 months ended May 2019 there were 1,204 road deaths, which is a decrease of 3.3 per cent from the 12-month period ending May 2018.

The rate of annual deaths, at present, per 100,000 population stands at 4.8. This is a 4.8 per cent decrease compared to the rate for the 12-month period ending May 2018.

The statistical report is produced monthly and published online. Data is sourced from road traffic or police authorities in each jurisdiction.
