Toll drivers raise funds for sick child

Toll Group drivers have raised over $51,000 to support a colleague's family.

The drivers, based at Woolworths Distribution Centre in Minchinbury, organised a number of raffles and fundraisers to collect the money, which will support Toll Minchinbury driver, Phillip Mackey, and his family.

Mackey's four-year-old son Liam has a physical disability called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita and a genetic mutation that affects only 25 other people in the world.

He also suffers a very rare pain condition called Paroxysmal Extreme Pain Disorder. A bout of severe pain in August caused him to stop breathing, wherein Liam suffered a brain injury causing cerebral palsy and vision impairment.

Liam relies on a continuous feeding tube and is unable to sit up, walk or stand unassisted, requiring 24-7 care from family and some carers.

The funds were presented to the Mackey family in a lunchtime event at the Woolworths Distribution Centre in Minchinbury.

“It’s heartening to see the drivers in our yard coming together to support this incredible family,” said Rob Hancock, Toll Site Manager at Woolworths Distribution Centre in Minchinbury.

“I can’t imagine a better story than this, which shows the distance that union members are prepared to walk together to help one of their own," said
Richard Olsen, State Secretary of the Transport Workers Union of NSW.

A GoFundMe page has been setup for public donations.
