Truck sales tracking higher

Truck manufacturer and component supplier group, the Truck Industry Council (TIC), has confirmed that sales have continued to deliver good growth during October as 2,885 new trucks and 525 new heavy vans were sold during the month.

Year to date, cab-chassis and the prime mover category was 10.7 per cent above the results at the end of October 2016 (+2,390 units) while the van category delivered an 8.1 per cent increase (+367 units) over the same period, according to a TIC report.

The heavy duty sector reportedly achieved its second best October result on record with 1,188 new units, 36.6 per cent above October’s total last year while the medium duty sector maintained “modest positive growth”, achieving 652 deliveries and 155 extra trucks so far for the year (+2.7 per cent).

Light duty sector sales were down 47 units (-1.6 per cent) compared to October 2017 but the year to date accrual of 9,477 is 601 units (+6.8 per cent), demonstrating steady growth.

October was a “solid” month for van sales at +8.1 per cent compared to the same period last year, with 525 additional units contributing to the year to date total of 4,873 vans.

“All segments are tracking higher than they were at this time in 2016,” said TIC CEO, Tony McMullen.

“I believe the momentum built year to date will continue for November and December to produce the best sales result we have seen since the GFC.

“A solid year end to 2017 will result in a healthy start to 2018 and continued sales growth next year,” he said.
