Viva Energy supports diversity in the Pilbara and Kimberley

Viva Energy Australia has signed a contract with Western Australian company, Red Dirt Transport Services, as part of its commitment to increasing indigenous participation and supplier diversity.

Viva Energy Category Manager – Logistics, James Officer, met the Red Dirt team in 2016, when they submitted a proposal to do road transport services in the Pilbara.

“What I loved most about Red Dirt was Steven and Mike’s tenacity and drive to grow their business,” said Officer.  “We thought their proposal was very competitive at the time and even though they were unsuccessful on this occasion, I liked how quickly they came back and asked: ‘Well, what’s next? What can we do for you?’ So we quickly identified the Broome and Darwin work, which involves delivering fuel to our customers in Broome and the Northern Territory, commencing later this year.”

The contract was reportedly awarded based on a proposal by Red Dirt to undertake a portion of the scope, supporting the successful contract manager – national logistics provider, K&S Freighters.

“It was an excellent submission that presented a service offering of safe, reliable and cost-effective supply to our customers in remote areas,” said Officer.

Viva Energy is also a member of Supply Nation, a not-for-profit organisation that connects Australian companies and governments to Indigenous business.

“I attended a Supply Nation seminar in Melbourne a few months ago, and it was really insightful to learn about who they are, what they do and how they can help Indigenous businesses gain exposure in a variety of markets,” said Officer.

“We’ve got terminals in regional locations throughout Australia, and we find it really rewarding to give back and watch these local communities grow and prosper.

“For example, we awarded a tender to an Indigenous company in Far North Queensland, and it was great to go up there and see how their business is growing. They’re getting exposure from different angles and gaining a lot more customers which has led to them almost doubling their staff numbers,” he said.
