Volvo names its most fuel-efficient driver in Australia

The winner of the Volvo Trucks Drivers’ Fuel Challenge 2018 has been announced.

Steve Wastell of BLU Logistics was named as Australia’s most fuel-efficient driver yesterday after two days of competition involving 21 drivers.

Wastell will travel to Sweden in September to compete in the global final. He will contend against drivers representing 37 other countries from around the globe.

Fuel efficiency was tracked via Dynafleet data from which it provided real-time information and analysis of driver performance.

The drivers were measured in both on and off-road scenarios. Each is designed to test their ability to achieve optimal fuel efficiency from a truck in varying conditions.

Fuel efficiency is measured by four separate ratings and scored between one and 100. The ratings included speed adaptation, engine and gear utilisation, anticipation and braking, and standstill. The higher the score the better the fuel efficiency.

On the second day of the Challenge the field of 21 drivers was cut to 12 before it was whittled down, through precise data, to eventual winner Wastell.

Mitch Peden, Vice President Volvo Trucks Australia, commenting on the event, said a fuel-efficient driver is a safe driver.

“The Volvo Drivers’ Fuel Challenge demonstrates how vitally important it is for truck drivers to develop great skill and competency in managing fuel consumption,” said Peden.

“Our trucks are designed with the best fuel efficiency features possible, however, it’s ultimately up to the driver to achieve good performance.”

Wastell described the Drivers’ Fuel Challenge as an incredible event for the way it encouraged drivers to scrutinise every part of their own driving.

“It’s also a great way to challenge the typical stereotype of truck drivers. There’s no doubting that this is a difficult course to navigate in the best of conditions, let alone while trying to get the most fuel efficient performance of the day,” he said.

“Australia has some of the best truck drivers in the world, and we can only get better if we’re looking at our telematics and working out how to improve by driving with fuel efficiency in mind.”

“Now I just can’t wait to get to Sweden and do Australia proud in the world finals.”
