Vulcan Steel receives first new-gen Mercedes-Benz Actros rigid

Metal supplier, Vulcan Steel, has become the first company in Australia to add a new generation Mercedes-Benz 1630 4x2 rigid model to its fleet, following its launch at the Brisbane Truck Show.

Vulcan Steel Victorian Operations Manager, Jim Michalopoulos, has said the company has been impressed with the new generation Mercedes-Benz prime movers.

“We are seeing mega fuel savings, we estimate we save 10-to-12 per cent in fuel alone in the metro run,” said Michalopoulos. “That is pretty big for us.”

According to Mercedes-Benz, the integrated safety features of the new rigid appealed to Vulcan Steel, especially the Proximity Control Assist adaptive cruise control with stop/start function and Active Brake Assist emergency braking.

“We are doing a lot of work with our trailers and our trucks to ensure optimum safety for both the general public and our drivers,” said Michalopoulos.

Mercedes-Benz has said the 1630 rigid model is fitted with a new OM 936 six-cylinder engine generating 300hp, which is connected to an 8-speed automated Powershift transmission.
