Waste management firm buys 20 new trucks

JJ Richards & Sons has invested in 20 new waste recovery trucks for a new nine-year kerbside waste and recycling contract in Cairns.

The new service contract was signed earlier this year to cater to the 112,000 domestic waste and recycling bins across 71,000 properties in the Cairns region.

“This is the first major shake-up of our waste collection for many years and we expect it to bring some positive changes,” said Cairns Regional Council Mayor, Bob Manning.

“The new trucks are bigger and more efficient, and every route has been reviewed to make sure they’re providing the best service to residents.

"The trucks are helping to spread the message to ‘reduce, re-use recycle’ and who to contact if anyone observes illegal dumping, which has the potential to ruin our spectacular natural environment.”

According to Manning, almost 60,000 tonnes of domestic waste and recycling was collected from kerbside bins in 2016-17.

“It’s a huge job to take care of all the household waste being produced across the region,” Manning said.

“We’re pleased to welcome JJ Richards & Sons to the job and look forward to a productive ongoing relationship.”
