Western Star tipper delivers long term investment

A Bacchus Marsh concrete subcontractor in western Victoria has taken delivery of a new Western Star 4800 FXC tipper.

Powered by a Detroit DD-15, the prime mover with a 34 inch low roof sleeper, has been fitted with a BTE aluminium body for use as truck and dog as it transport construction materials for Hanson.

At 48.5 tonnes, owner Dean Carr confirms it has been spec’d with crosslocks and diff locks on all three axles - in compliance with Performance-Based-Standards.

PBS approval, once he receives it, will increase payload to 49.5 tonnes.

“The suspension is working great and it gets into everywhere I need to go despite being bigger than my previous truck,” he said.

“Concrete plants aren’t known for their generosity of space for tipping but given the agility of the Western Star that hasn’t been an issue at all.”

With dual stacks the Western Star according to Carr is very quiet even when fully loaded, working between the sprawling western suburbs of Melbourne.

Carr said he was attracted to the Detroit motor and the warranty of five years or a million kilometres.

“Detroit has a good name and I know a lot of people with Detroit engines who swear by them,” he said.

“That swayed me a fair bit.”
