Auxiliary Power from Cummins

In the US, Cummins is demonstrating an auxiliary power unit for trucks using a tubular solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The system is fuelled by diesel and can be used to power a number of pieces of equipment when the truck engine is switched off. The current demonstration model is being used to power the trucks air-conditioner, lighting and in-cabin power.

The system uses a configuration similar to hybrid vehicles to enable it to produce both DC and AC power for a wide variety of applications. 1100W direct current is available or 820W of alternating current.
Although still in the development phase, the technology is expected to be able to provide auxiliary power at very low emission levels combined with low noise levels.
