CB Metcalf takes delivery of Diamond Edition Kenworth T909

Grain haulage specialist, CB Metcalf Transport recently, picked up the third Kenworth T909 Diamond Edition to roll off the assembly line at PACCAR’s Bayswater plant.

The Wellcamp (Toowoomba) based operation is a loyal Kenworth customer of Brown & Hurley Toowoomba, and was extra pleased to purchase one of just 75 Diamond Edition Kenworths currently being produced to celebrate the iconic dealership’s three-quarters of a century in business.

The new truck will be proudly operated by CB Metcalf driver Ray Dalzotto.

“This is the third new Kenworth I’ve purchased through Brown and Hurley Toowoomba,” said CB Metcalf Managing Director, Chris Metcalf, who started the business nine years ago.

“I’m very happy with the service from the dealership and the salesman, Richard Lilburne,” he said.

The blue Diamond Edition Kenny is powered by a ‘king of the hill’ Cummins X15 engine good for 600hp and 2,050lb/ft of torque, driving through an Eaton Fuller RTLO-22918B 18-speed manual transmission to a Meritor RT46-160 tandem drive with a 20.9 tonne ground capacity. This is matched with Kenworth AirGlide 460 suspension also rated at 20.9 tonnes.

Interior niceties in the 50-inch bunk include a TV, microwave and IcePack air-conditioning and there is a fridge that slides out from under the seat. The interior fitout was done by IcePack which also supplied and fitted the exterior stainless-steel work.

Exterior bling bits include a Barup bullbar and stainless-steel wrapped fuel tanks, along with twin low-rise air filter housings, a bug deflector and sun visor all fashioned from polished stainless. Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy rims and a pair of seven-inch straight-cut twin stacks round out the polished presence of this hefty highway hauler. Also setting off the brilliant blue paintwork is detailed pinstriping crafted by Guy at Spot on Signs.

The unit features a stout Gross Combination Mass (GCM) rating of 115 tonnes – more than ample for its role hauling a Graham Lusty Trailers (GLT) A-double tipper set connected by a GLT tri-axle converter dolly.

Thanks to the light and strong aluminium GLT set, the combination tares at just 28 tonnes and, with a GCM of 85 tonnes, has a payload capacity of 57 tonnes.

It features onboard mass management courtesy of Airtec digital scales and operates under Performance-Based Standards (PBS), allowing it to travel between central western New South Wales and Queensland, including into the port of Brisbane.

Metcalf said he is very happy with GLT, saying he has purchased several sets over the past few years.

“You pay a little bit extra for Graham Lusty gear but it holds its value well and looks good; and, most importantly, lasts well under the less than ideal road conditions we have to endure across regional Australia,” he said.

The trailers ride on Hendrickson INTRAAX air suspended disc brake axles with HXL7 wheel ends clad with Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy rims shod with Bridgestone tyres.

Fittingly, the number plates on the Kenworth read CBM 003, which Metcalf said was the catalyst for him ordering the third Diamond Edition T909 in the series.

“I used to have these plates on a Kenworth T604 I owned, so I thought it would be good to repurpose them on the new truck where the numbers actually mean something,” he said.
