Improved SCR system announced

Automotive component manufacturer, Delphi, has announced a breakthrough in nitrogen oxide control for diesel engines with a new improved selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. The system introduces a new high-pressure injection system for the urea solution as it is injected into the exhaust stream before entering the catalyst.

The new system injects the adblue at a pressure of 300 PSI. This higher pressure when combined with a new installation arrangement prevents the urea solution from boiling within the doser.

This allows the tip of the dosing mechanism to be directly exposed to the hot exhaust. The system adds extra energy to be adblue’s spray meaning less mixing energy from the exhaust is required and it eliminates deposit formation at the nozzle tip.

A more consistent spray performance and improved electronic control of the dosing means the urea is injected more efficiently, reducing adblue use. The system can also be fitted much closer to the engine, than is currently the practice, reducing the need for catalyst heating.

The new system has been developed, so far, for light duty diesel engines but Delphi expects to introduce a system suitable for heavy-duty diesel engines in the future.
