Followmont Transport expands QLD footprint

Followmont Transport is opening new depots in Mackay and Cairns this week to boost local economy and regional service level capabilities.

The Mackay depot will officially open Friday 6 March and is located at 115 – 127 Diesel Drive in Paget, Mackay.

Followmont Transport's new Mackay depot is built on two hectares of land, featuring and increased 4,500-square-metre warehouse, undercover washbay, two-storey 420-metres-squared office, 16 self-contained drivers' rooms and has been fully operational since August 2019.

With a focus on sustainable solutions, the new depot, according to Followmont, is also powered by a 99kW solar system, LED lighting and high efficiency air conditioning which is already seeing around a 40 per cent increase in energy savings compared to the existing Mackay depot.

The decision to build a new Depot in Mackay was easy said Chris Knuth, Queensland
General Manager of Followmont Transport.

"We can now provide an even better level of service to Mackay and surrounding regions on a greater scale with the new facilities that we now have," said Knuth.

The Mackay site was also enhanced with increased security and onsite warehousing facilities to reportedly meet an already demanding need for freight solutions in the region.

"Our people live by our values and this passion drives the business to help others at any given time," said Followmont Transport Managing Director, Mark Tobin.

"We are proud to be part of the Mackay community and doing our bit to help out," he said.

Meanwhile, the new Cairns depot is set to officially open on Saturday 7 March and is located at 25 Ponzo Street, Woree, directly across the road from the previous Followmont site, consolidating a robust delivery network for the family owned Queensland transport business.

This site is reported to be built on 1.6 hectares of land, comprising a 2,700-square-metre warehouse, two-storey 210-square metre office, undercover washbay and 280-square-metre workshop. With a focus on sustainable solutions, the new depot is also powered by a 50kW solar system, LED lighting and high efficiency air conditioning.

“This new depot was a strategic decision from Followmont aimed at meeting the needs of a growing Cairns region," said Knuth. "We have greater control of customers freight, in and out of the region and customers now have direct access to our network and services throughout QLD and NSW which is a big win for everybody."

"Followmont Transport is a proud and hardworking member of the Cairns community and it is a privilege to be able to support such a wide and diverse part of Queensland," said Tobin.

With the addition of the new Mackay and Cairns depots, Followmont Transport employs 850-plus staff members, travels over 150,000km every night and has more than 30 depot locations in Queensland and New South wales.

Last year, Followmont Transport celebrated 35 years of operations.
